What is AI exposure, and how is it measured?

Short answer

AI exposure measures how much of a role's tasks, workflows and skills can be performed or substantially assisted by AI systems. It is measured at the task level and then aggregated to the role, because jobs are rarely automated whole - individual activities are. High exposure means the work is changing quickly; it does not automatically mean the job disappears.

What it means

Exposure is a property of work, not of a person. Two accountants with the same title can have different exposure if one spends the week on reconciliation and the other on advisory conversations with clients.

Exposure is also not the same as risk. A highly exposed task can make the person doing it more productive and more valuable, if they own the judgement around it.

Automation versus augmentation

Automation exposureAI can complete the task end-to-end with light review. Typical of templated, high-volume, rule-bound work. Reduces the hours the task is worth.
Augmentation exposureAI does the first pass and the human directs, corrects and decides. Raises output per person and shifts the valuable part of the work toward judgement.
Low exposureThe task depends on accountability, physical presence, negotiation, trust, or messy local context that models cannot access.

What gets measured

  • Tasks - the discrete activities that make up the role.
  • Workflows - how tasks connect, and whether the hand-offs can be collapsed.
  • Skills - which of the skills the role relies on are becoming commodity capability.
  • Job requirements - how postings for the same role are being rewritten, which is an early signal of employer expectations.

  • Software engineering: boilerplate, test scaffolding and routine refactoring are highly exposed; system design, production ownership and debugging unfamiliar failures are not.
  • Marketing: first-draft copy, variant generation and routine reporting are highly exposed; positioning, budget accountability and channel judgement are not.
  • Finance: reconciliation, standard reporting and document extraction are highly exposed; client advisory, regulatory judgement and sign-off are not.
  • HR: screening, scheduling and policy drafting are exposed; investigations, negotiation and difficult conversations are not.
  • Customer support: templated tier-1 responses are highly exposed; complex escalations and retention conversations are not.
