Concept explainer
How do professionals identify the skills they need to develop?
Short answer
A career skill gap analysis compares the skills your role is starting to demand against the skills you can currently evidence, and ranks the difference by urgency. The reliable method is to work from how your role is being redefined - job postings, changing responsibilities, exposure of your tasks - rather than from generic skill lists. The output should be a short, sequenced list, not an inventory.

What it means
A gap is only meaningful in relation to a target. 'Learn AI' is not a gap. 'Be able to specify, review and take responsibility for AI-assisted output in your own domain' is a gap, because it is tied to how your role is changing.
Most people over-collect gaps and under-sequence them. Three gaps closed properly beat twelve started.
How to run one
- List what you actually do in a normal week, by activity and rough time share.
- Mark each activity as exposed, augmented or defensible.
- Read ten recent postings for your role one level above you and note the requirements that were not there two years ago.
- Write down the skills those postings assume, and which of them you can evidence with real work.
- Rank the difference by two factors: how soon it matters, and how much of your week it affects.
- Pick the top two or three and give each a concrete deliverable rather than a course.
Get your gap list produced from your own profile, already sequenced.
How to prioritise what you find
| Urgent and central | Affects a large share of your week and is already appearing in postings. Start here. |
|---|---|
| Urgent but peripheral | Appearing quickly but touches little of your work. Learn enough to be credible, no more. |
| Important but slow | Will matter in a year or two. Schedule it; do not let it displace the urgent list. |
| Generic | Broad skills everyone is being told to learn. Low differentiation - do not lead with these. |
What JobsAIQ does
JobsAIQ produces the gap list for you from your own profile: it identifies which of your activities are exposed, which strengths are defensible, and which capabilities the redefined version of your role now assumes. Gaps arrive sequenced, with a 14-day starting plan and relevant learning resources and tools attached, so the list is actionable rather than aspirational.
Frequently asked questions
- How many skill gaps should I work on at once?
- Two or three. Closing a small number of gaps to the point where you can show real work beats partial progress across many.
- Should I learn to code or use AI tools?
- It depends on your role. The useful question is which capability changes the value of the work you already do, which is why gaps should come from your own task mix rather than a generic list.
- How do I evidence a skill I have just learned?
- With a deliverable in your actual work context - a shipped change, a process you rebuilt, a report you automated - not a certificate alone.
